A gut renovation and modern addition to an early 1900s townhouse on a corner lot in Williamsburg proposes a radical break from Brooklyn’s traditional townhouse “addition” typology. Rather than equally divide available floor area at each level or simply prioritize a larger lower addition, the design allocates all available area to the second and third floors. Available floor area was also increased by removing a portion of the existing townhouse’s third floor to create a double height living room.
This massing allows covered parking under the new floating addition and integrates unique exterior landscapes at four distinct elevations. The surface of the addition is clad in a perforated, corrugated zinc that subtly plays off the scale, proportion, fenestration and texture of the existing townhouse. New and old are unified in a black exterior.
